The Gyro Meat

*In this last section of my Bioneers course we learned and studied about the life of fungi and different other kinds of decomposers. We investigated on earthworms, mushrooms, mold and much more that concerns about the natural decomposers. We learned that there are many man made materials that affects the world and our environment right now to this day. Such as, plastics bottles, paper plates, styrofoam and etc.. We then did a project based on products we want to reconstruct and or make better for the world and especially the animals in the wild. We got down to the roots of what is bad in the society today and changed it. I am proud of my project because it's based off of something that everybody enjoys. I get to find out and research about something I've been eating for quite a whgile. Me investigating about where gyro meat comes from and what happens to it will have to be one of the best things I've done this whole section of my course.

The slideshow above explains the process of where gyro meat comes from and what happens to it when we eat it. In a quick summary, gyro meat comes from a lamb, sheep, and or goat's lower stomach. It was originated in Greece, and was first sold in the city of Chicago back in the 1960's. The process of how a gyro  is technically made is that first, the meat is cut from either lamb, sheep, or goat then the meat is cleaned and tested for any diseases within it. It is then packaged in various packaging factories over seas where it is then shipped all across the world to numerous supermarkets, gyro shops, and other locally owned fast food places. Gyro meat is usually either completly consumed by humans, and or it is wasted and thrown away. When it is thrown away it ends up in a landfill somewhere far away where scavengers feast off of it. If not thrown away, the human feces could be used as fertilizer across seas to feed the soil then the goats can eat again.

The Day of Silence

*In Global Peace we learned about Satyagraha, which means ones self practice or demonstration of peace and truthfulness. To take action me and my partner made a vow to be silent for the whole day. To show people that the Chicago violence rates need to go down because to many younger kids are getting their lives taken away. I'm proud of this project because people actually took notice of why we are silent and I felt that we got a point across by doing it. That's the action we took in our last chapter of the Global Peace course.

Practicing satyagraha is very hard, but learning from Gandhi you can find a way to just be peaceful and create peace in your own form or way. There are over 198 non violent actions that anybody can take to create peace and serenity in a certain area or subject. In Chicago there is more violence than war in parts of the city. The west side (Austin Community) is diseased with the bloodshed of gun violence and domestic violence up and down every block, and the south side (Englewood Community) is just the same but even worse. One organization called Chicago Cease Fire acts out non violent actions in order to get people's attention to stop the violence. A couple of things they do is community formations (meetings), marches, and community protests in order to keep the equality and peace on the streets between people.

The reason behind why my partner and I took a vow of silence for the day is because we want to see how people react to it. We wanted people to talk to us, we wanted people to try and make us talk to them also. All because we knew that that's how people feel when they have lost a loved one. If somebody is deceased whom was was near and dear to you, you would want them to talk and be active with you. This has a connection to the violence in the city of Chicago because silencing the lives of many may silence the lives of the living for the violence to stop. We practically made people realize in our school community and neighborhoods that we live in, that the violence in the city has to stop or many others will be silenced from the world

The Pro-Eagler

*For this section in my Bioneers class we wanted to re-create something and make it better. That something could mean anything from improved house roofs to better car engines, and from new fishing nets to better scuba diving equipment. When we were brain storming on better designs and newer re-creations using Animal Adaptations as our examples. An Animal Adaptation is a form or structure modified to fit in a changed environment. For example, my Animal Adaptation is a bald eagles wingspan. I wanted to change something netter for everybody, and that is new airplane propellers. Below will be showing a collage of an "eagle" and sketches of the new airplane propeller I redesigned.

DS, (November 22, 2013). Wreck It Money Eagle

               DS, (November 22, 2013). The Pro-Eagler

The two images above are my creations of an eagle, and the new design of a propeller that I took from an eagle. When creating the collage I kept in mind a design and an actual look of an eagle. On the sketches below the collage, I drew out the comparison of an eagles wingspan, and a propellers length. I drew out how thin an actual eagles wings are, and I drew how thin I wanted my propellers. Then I sketched out how it would work without being fueld by an engine but by a motor. I also drew the propeller in a way that it's so long that when the motor stops the propeller adjusts it's self as if it were wings (straight) and it lets the airplane glide to the ground safely as if it were an eagle.

Swadeshi In Bronzeville

*In my Global Peace class for this section we learned about his term called Swadeshi. Swadeshi means ones self location. Ones self location is literally where somebody is, whether it's indoors or outdoors. So we are writing letters to our local community centers, our aldermans, and our somebody in our specific community that has control of it. I live in the Bronzeville community, so I dedicated my letter to the Alderman who runs the community and makes sure everything is copacetic. The 3rd Ward Alderman, Pat Dowell.

Pat Dowell 3rd Ward Alderman

Dear, 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell

My name is Darrion Sutton, and I live in the Bronzeville Community. I am currently attending GCE (Global Citizenship Experience) High School north of Downtown Chicago. I am currently learning this term called Swadeshi. Meaning "One's self location." I have sent you this letter becasue there is a problem in my community that I see through my eyes. There are High School, and College dropouts. There are gangs, and unemployment and even kids that aren't even attending school. I see more and more of these problems growing every day in my neighborhood. My concern about this overall is the Violence in my neighborhood, becasue there are many children where I live at also. I have a little brother and he's 13 years old. He attends Mollison Grammar School and even he has experienced violence around our home and his school.

This problem affects this local economy harshly, because with businesses being around gang territories, it's hard for people to go shopping for clothes, groceries, many other things without "others" harassing them. This problem also affects the local economy because even  though there are Safe Passages around the neighborhood bad things can still happen. For example, a police officer may sit on the corner of 47th and King, but he/she cannot see all the way down the block (47th - 43rd) where worse things could be happening.

I have a solution to most of the violence that I've been seeing lately. Even though there are many centers where kids can go if they're out of school or if they're not even attending school, I think there should be a center that has activities and clubs that kids actually wants to do. Such as poetry clubs, music and engineering, basketball, cooking clubs, and stuff that kids like to do. Most of the centers has little to none of these activities, and if they do the centers aren’t usually serious about the clubs that are going on anyways.

If this plan goes can go over well I think there will be less youth on the streets and more of them doing things that shows their true talents. Thank you for at least reading this letter and taking in the information that somebody wants to change.

Bioneers AP1: Learning About-From-To A Plant

The Yellow Weed You Always Step On

*My Bioneers class had came up with the idea of expressing the knowledge of certain plants that we chose. Even though nobody knows what species is fully evolved yet, we chose certain plants in nature and brought out their uniqueness about it. I am proud of my plant the Taraxacum (Dandelion Weed), because it's one of the most unique overlooked plants on earth. We see it in our gardens, and in grassy fields. We yank them out of the ground from their roots, not knowing how much they mean to some people on earth. What I learned was that it's important to some people on earth, like in Belgium. I learned that Belgium grows Dandelions as a crop in their country for a living. Dandelions in their country are used in recipes such as, soups, salads, and even spices.

Sean Mcmenemy, June 2013. Dandelion Plant

The organism I am studying about is the Taraxacum, and or Dandelion Weed. The dandelion is unique for many different reasons and I will elaborate on it. The origin of the place, the way it provides nutrients for humans, and the special abilities it has within it. The Taraxacum could teach human to be the underdog in the environment we live in. The Dandelion is stepped on and looked over but in reality the Dandelion is the underdog. For example, now-a-days there are people in society that are over looked as "the thing that is not wanted." So one of the ways humans can apply a dandelion's skill to their everyday life is to bring out the "nutritious" side of us. Meaning to apply one of our many talents that can help others and benefit us in certain areas and region. (Like a dandelion being used in other places on earth.)

The Dandelion is native in Eurasia, & North and South America around the year 1363. The name Dandelion comes from the French term "Lions Tooth". The English interpretation of the Dandelion is weedy composite plant, Taraxacum officinale, having edible, deeply toothed or notched leaves, golden-yellow flowers, and rounded clusters of white, hairy seeds. In Belgium Dandelions are grown as an edible crop to humans and other species. There are multiple dishes from soups, to salads and all are very nutritious for you also. Inside the Dandelion plant there is a liquid called White Blood. The white blood can be consumed to detect the pregnancy of other plant seed.

In conclusion Dandelions are the most overlooked plant and or weed that many people need but do not realize. Dandelions are very helpful all across the world we just have to think about it. This is my Like A Tree Project.

Who Am I Poem

*In this first chapter of Global Peace, I have written a poem about my Freedom and out look on it. I spoke about how I'm looked at in this society, and what I'm trying to do in this society. Within this poem you will see that I talk about past history and what I think about it. I wrote a poem because in my Global Peace class because we were chosen to make a Freedom song and or some sort of musical composition. Poetry is in the category so I chose what I'm good at. Also Global Peace is about literal peace I'm the world. We are researching on Peace in this nation and world, and seeing how we can improve on things envolving everybody (Sarvodaya). Enjoy

Who Am I

A young black man smacking society back in place with the back of my black hand, understanding that Sarvodaya begins with one man. Indian, Mexican, Buddhist & Christian our understanding and beliefs are all so very distant, and also I want to elaborate that freedom was for everybody even back in the day. Even back in those days when we had MLK, Malcolm X but the Government put a hex on their bodies so it's hard to embody somebody whose been bodied (killed).
I'm inspired by the by the foulness of our youth today, They used to use the N Word, now it's used today, it's Not useful or fruitful we're all delusional in a torn apart society so now we think it's just the usual.
Thank you for your time...

Poem for the Less Fortunate

*For this Action Project in Voices that Work this time I had a Disagreement Project. I had to come up with and or think of something I disagree with in this world. As usual I think highly of the homeless because who else will and also I care for the less fortunate because I know that if hard times hit you also you will feel the pressure of being that "flesh ridden disease" within society as they feel on the daily bases. So what I did on my Disagreement Project was that I made a poem talking about the statistics and and outcome of the homeless people in the streets of Chicago, Illinois. Enjoy

VOW

In this nation it's WE and it's THEM. WE as in the Western World, and THEM as third world
treating the homeless as if they were the Fake pearls of a necklace on wealthy women is the same as treating the Real diamonds on the wrist of a homeless man.
20% children, Mother Daughter, and Man and 80% adults homeless until they grow old

Now in the back of my mind I'm held hostage the government has done locked up and blocked up my chakra's so God sent his only begotten son in JOHNathan and what do we do, over look em tell em to go get a doctrine go find a job as a doctor and make it to the top and sin? I believe that your God is within listening to popular politicians in the media contradicting our oppositions upon the homelessness of adults, children and women.

643,067 we help none and we all expect to get into Heaven

Over 5,000 a night

And we still choose not help our brethren
And we still choose to buy new shoes the latest tunes and not realizing that the homeless can't even buy their own food
What type of world do we live in, its the type of world where teens get high and call it living
It's the type of world that nobody wants to make change for the person on the street who's asking for change. No need for explanation or for anybody to explain, I disagree with righteousness that nobody wants to shine a light on this the fact that

Most of Chicagoans is part of the homelessness.

I want to change this...

The Resources Project

*In Design and Engineering we came up with ideas on how to save our resources. We did research on how many things we use a day, and how much natural resources we use a day and yearly. The resources people use on the daily bases are from tissue paper, to plastic bags. From Starbucks coffee cups, to take-out tupper ware. My partner and I chose to give a prime example on a resource people use everyday. We chose tissue paper. We chose this specific resource because people use it everyday and needs it for almost everything. Our project is a Tissue Paper Forest. We used just as much tissue paper on this project as somebody would in a months worth (1,440). Enjoy.

                                                  DS, (October 2013). Tissue Forest

The purpose of this project was to take an item that is used on an everyday basis, see how much is accumulated in trash, and put that item into a relatable and impacting visual representation to try to show people how much they're really wasting. Our desired outcome will be to influence people into wasting less out of this awareness.

Within this unit I realized that I produced more trash every day than I'd ever thought. I learned that trash is accumulates and the small details in habit make a big difference in the long run. Seeing the flaws in these number systems allowed me to develop gratitude for our current number system. One of the things I was most proud of was coming up with a project idea with my partner; something that looks good and is presentable.

Back to the project. The installation itself is made of cardboard tubes from used toilet paper rolls, scattered toilet paper sheets, and an entire roll in the center. We wanted every piece of material to represent something. For example, the cardboard tubes are cut into little trees, representing the forests that suffer from the production of toilet paper. There are 20 sheets of toilet paper under the forest to represent the average use of tissue paper the average person uses in a day, and there's a large roll of toilet paper in the center to represent a month's worth of tissue paper. By doing this, we hoped to show people that they may not realize how much they're using up by just looking at a compact roll of toilet paper (the roll in the center). When as little as a day's worth is all spread out (the sheets underneath the trees), it shows that to be much more paper waste than expected.

This project took my partner and I at least two days to come up with. Hopefully it will impact the people it reaches to be more mindful of how much paper they really need when using the bathroom. This is important because in one year approximately two billion rolls of tissue paper are used world-wide. In one day, a person uses about 20 sheets of toilet paper , 4 people use 80 sheets, and 16 people use 320 sheets.

Helping the Homeless

*In Humanities we have been working on Dreams that we have for the world. We worked on how we will change certain problems in the world and present them to everybody. Our dream speeches acquired statistics, opinions, examples, and our action plan to make our Dream come true. My Dream speech was about how I wanted to give the homeless a chance in life. I wanted to basically use some of the costs not used in the war(s) yearly given to homeless shelters and organizations. Even though "every piece of US monies have to be used in the war", I honestly believe that "statement" is false, and here's why.

Helping the Homeless

I Have A Dream

"Not to long ago I spoke with this man on the streets about how hard he has worked for his family and himself, but still somehow ended up homeless. He said he's been working for 14 years and still is to this day. But having to go home to a homeless shelter hurts him deeply because he knows that his house is still standing, but he also knows that forclosure can happen to anybody. I told him a little bit of my knowledge now. I told him that Affording houses affects 72% of cities poverty has an affect of 52% and the government does little to nothing but has sent over $3 Trillion dollars to war costs (Cost of War Blog Post. April 2013). Now that's the problem right there. Why does the US have to spend so much for frivolous wars that didn't even involve us? How many homeless people have you seen on the streets? Have you ever helped them out? Or did you just walk past them as if they were a flesh ridden disease?

"Too many people nowadays think that bankruptcy, forclosure, or just being broke can't happen to them. According to (The United States Conference of Mayors. June 2008.) the three causes of homelessness is Poverty, Forclosure, and Unemployment. My plan is to create an organization so that the government can pass a bill that states that they have to give the leftover funds that was not used in the war to at least 25-40% of the homeless across the nation.
Thank you for taking your time out of your day to read/listen to this Dream."

The Iverson Bicycle

-While brainstorming in Design & Engineering Matt, Meshach, and I came up with the idea of making a bicycle innovative for everybody. The purpose of this is to create a bicycle better and nice for everybody. The bicycle we came up with was The Iverson Bicycle. The Bicycle has a low rider motorcycle design/frame to it which gives it a speedy but cruiseable bicycle that gives a nice ride for all people who likes to get where they're going but in a fashionable way.

-I'm proud that the bike project came out to a success and I like that the design is something nobody else has ever came up with.

-If I had to describe my project it would have to be the most creative and innovative form of a bicycle in this lifetime.

-This bike design was made specifically for somebody. Somebody who enjoys to cruise to where she is going and take in the environment. Her name is Christine and she goes to school not very far from her house. She wants a bike that she can ride smoothly to school and in a timely fashion. The design of the bicycle is in the form of a low rider motorcycle, which gives her that speedy "cruise control".

-Now it takes Christine at least 20 minutes to get to school (Google Maps). Her average speed is 3/20 miles per minute (distance/time). Now the wheel diameter is 28 inches (on a average bike), and the circumference is 87.96 (pi x diameter). It will take Christine's bike 2,160.98 rotations per trip (coverted circumference into feet, and solved how many feet are in 3 miles).

The Zen Wheel Barrow

*In Design & Engineering we created gardening tools more innovative for people who needs it the most. Some people made better shovels, and some people made better handheld tools. Me and my partner made a Wheel Barrow with better features and a better look. I learned that people need/wants the better things in life. So we created something for people who always needed better gardening tools. I'm glad that teamwork was incorporated within this Action Project. My partner was very helpful through this project also. Without her we would not have The Wheel Barrow Zen. The Action Project we did together will help the elderly who enjoys gardening. It can also help others of all kinds of ages. We call it the Wheel Barrow Zen check it out here! "">
