The Trap Theatre Stage

For the second Action Project of Stage Chemistry, we had to build our stage in a 3-D model according to our blueprints from our first Action Projects. We learned about protocols and why certain places need them. Protocols are the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality, precedence, and etiquette. We needed to check our measurements from our blueprints from Action 1 and put those numbers and calculations to scale. We then had to create 2 forms of action on our stage which could vary from; pulley system, trap door, turntable, etc. I chose to do a trap door and a pulley system for my stage. Building my stage was quite hard and tedious, it was very time consuming but it was all worth it. The 2 forms of actions which were fun to build was great. To show the action happening I have created gif's and took pictures of my stage below. Also, my Blueprint of my stage and my theatre is below as well.

My Stage Model:

Trap Theatre Stage (Top Left View), DS. 2014

Trap Theatre Stage (Top Right View), DS. 2014

Trap Theatre Stage (Bottom Right View), DS. 2014
When It Will Be Used (Trap): Because my theatre is a glass dome, the many kinds of shows that will be played there will take place in the setting of the season which we are in. For example, if A Christmas Carol is playing at my theatre the trap door will come into use for when one of the 3 ghosts of Christmas comes to Ebenezer Scrooge. The ghost will enter from under the stage and through the trap door and they will vanish when they step onto the trap door and the queue is given for it to drop in.

How It Works (Trap): If a 180lb person stands on the trap door, it will fall in. It is activated by a remote when an actor is standing on top of it on his or hers queue. The Newton Force onto this trap door that it can withstand is 800.676.
                    Calculation - 1lb = 4.4482 newtons (n)
                   4.4482 x 180lbs = 800.676

When It Will Be Used (Pulley):  Because my theatre is a glass dome, the many kinds of shows that will be played there will take place in the setting of the season which we are in. For example, if A Christmas Carol is playing at my theatre the pulley system will come into use for when one of the 3 ghosts of Christmas comes to Ebenezer Scrooge. The ghost will enter from stage right or stage left depending on which ever one is better for the director and the pulley system will be controlled manually.

How It Works (Pulley): If a 180lb person is being lifted on the pulley, no more weight and force can be added to that person or else he or she will fall. Now on one side of the pulley it will be a 180lb person, on the other side it will be a 190lb weight. The extra 10lb weight is there so that it can lift up whoever is being lifted without i being unbalanced because the 180lb person also has gravity on his/hers side.
                   Calculation - 1lb = 4.4482 newtons (n)
                    190lb x 4.4482 = 845.158n
                   180lb x 4.4482 = 800.676n
                  845.158 - 800.676 = 44.482n of Gravity acting on the 180lb person

Safety Protocols For Trap Door:

  • Watch Your Step
  • No More Than Two People On Trap Door
  • Know Your Weight
  • Do Not Jump On Trap Door

Attention, DS. 2014

Safety Protocols For Pulley System:
  • Look Up & See Where You Going
  • Be Mindful & See What's Going On
  • Do Not Tamper With Pulley System
  • Take Precaution When Pulley Is In Use

The Trap Theatre Blueprint

For the first Action Project of Stage Chemistry, we had to pick a space so that we can create a theatre.  We needed to have 6 adaptation to our theatre that stands out to us and or that stands out among any other theatre. For each adaptation we chose we had to write an if statement on if this was here and so on and so forth, and we had to write out an explanation on why we put that adaptation there. All together we had 7 blueprints and 6 were the elements of the entire place. This action project was such a challenge for me because of the sketches and my measurements. It was a great action project overall, especially this being the first one of Stage Chemistry. Check out my blueprints below.

Censorship of Ed Snowden

 For the final project in my Equality course we took on censorship. Censorship is the act or practice of censoring, that means that censorship can play a part into many things such as adult content, harmful material, and or negative information that is trying to be put out to the public by someone or some people. Through out this last unit I learned about a hacktivist group called Anonymous, and a Chinese contemporary artist/activist named Ai Weiwei. Anonymous is an online mass of people that can hack almost anything and everything they feel like that needs to be put out there for the public to know about. Ai Weiwei is a Chinese man who is known to be openly critical to the Chinese Government's position on human rights and democracy as well. For my project I looked into the many things and people that were censored and I have created one about Edward Snowden. I will be presenting my information through a Censorship Collage and I will be explaining more below.

                                                  DS, October 2014. The Spies

Edward Snowden is an American computer professional which is someone who have undergone training in colleges, universities and computer institutes. Edward was the person who is known for leaking some classified information from the National Security Agency in Hong Kong on June 10, 2013. Edward released the classified information in Hong Kong because the U.S. Government can't capture somebody from a country that has a rule of capturing and imprisoning somebody they need or want. Legal documentation of why and when has to be filled out. The U.S. Government and Edward was involved in this event. In the U.S. Edward was censored and his rights were violated in a way. These are the First Amendment Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, & Freedom of Religion. His right of freedom of speech and freedom of the press was censored/violated by the American Government, because in America they won't let you access the specific information that he had leaked out when he went to Hong Kong to do this on May 20, 2013.  The end result of that was that he was charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act which is when an U.S. citizen has foreign relation and foreign commerce. This is punishable by 30 years in prison and his passport was  as well by the U.S. government, so now he was put in the position of not being able to travel anywhere unless he was coming back to America.

      When the media/public heard about how Edward was censored they were outraged. All they knew was that the government was tapping and spying on them on almost everything they do electronically. The people of America did not know the specifics of what they were spying for and why they were doing it. Edward feels like the information that he had on the U.S. Government should be known by the people of the country because it's an invasion on their own privacy. The U.S. Government feels like Edward should be censored because he has no right putting out confidential information and he does not have the right power to do such actions ever.

  Because Edward released the private information on the U.S. Government in Hong Kong, the history of censorship in Hong Kong came about on February 13, 2009 (on political views). The types of expression that were censored was freedom of the press and freedom of speech. Because Edward is putting out information about a country that could be true or false, that country has the right to censor what ever is being told or trying to be told to the countries.

  When it comes down to whose side I will take on this issue of censorship I'd take Edward's side. Because I feel like Edward had the right intentions at heart to try to tell the world about how his government spies on the citizens of the United States via the Internet, Cellular Devices, etc. The way the U.S. Government is censoring this is bad because it goes against the consequentialist moral theories. The consequentialist moral theories are actions/beliefs whose rightful was is determined by how much good and happiness the action bring to the world, and people affected by it. The United States Government goes against this theory because this information that Edward Snowden has may be good and if it was put out & Americans got word of what their government was doing to them it would make them happy, if they didn't know already. It could also make them upset and angry because their  government is invading their privacy, but then make them happy again because now the people of the U.S. can rightfully vote or protest for that to stop happening.

 Propaganda plays a big role in this event and Edward Snowden is the one doing the propagandizing. Propaganda is information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
There are 7 types of propaganda and they are: Testimonial, Plain Folk, Bandwagon, Loaded Words, & Name Calling. The form of profane a that is being done in this event is Name Calling. This type of propaganda is used when someone or a group/organization of people is pointing the bad things that someone else does or another other group/organization does. In this event, Edward Snowden is doing the Name Calling towards the U.S. Government by calling them Spies and Liars to their own people of the country.

You Don't Need Water, But I Do

In the second Action Project for the Equality class, we wrote a manifesto that takes one side of a specific product/company of our choice. The purpose of this Action Project is to write a manifesto that empowers people to take action against inequalities in ownership. I focused on Ice Mountain water. I learned so much about the need of minimum wage workers and how their work is valued so much in companies. I am most proud of my final product and all the research I have done and the commandments I put together, my full manifesto is below:

                                                     Flickr, January 2009. Ice Mountain

Bottled water.  How are they all different? When did they originate? What’s up with it today? I am the CEO of Nestle, the company that produces Ice Mountain Water. We provide our customers with clean and convenient drinking water, but many people wonder how our water gross so much money. because it's great water but some wonder why it has a different label and grosses so much money. Water is the main component of what we use everyday. We cook, to , build buildings, and we simply need it to survive. All living things need water to survive and there is no other substance that can substitute it.

In 1767, Michigan Jackson Spa was the first establishment to bottle and commercialize water. The production of bottled water has changed drastically over time. There are more varieties of water such as, mineral water, purified water, filtered water, and distilled water. Today, there is a higher demand for bottled water because less cities in the United States have access to clean tap water. Because it is hard to access clean tap water, people go to their local stores and markets  buy bottled water. Bottled water is necessary so that people may get clean water whenever they want, without risking their health by getting water from their local wells or lakes.

I'll privatize water so with that I may provide clean drinking water to people in the communities from which we will pump our water and to people all over the world. Since I am providing clean drinking water to the people living where our factories are, I will also tax them for I am providing them with something they will otherwise not have access to.  I know that there are going to be some people devastated if they can't get their own water and their own kind of water that they want specifically, so I won't stop supplying water for the people.

As the CEO of Nestle, my goal is to get clean drinking water to as many people as possible. In order to do this, I will make sure that the people working for Nestle are well-paid and happy so that they continue to produce one of the most important products on the market.  As the CEO, I will buy out smaller companies to ensure that all people have equal access to the finest bottled water on the market. I believe that as the person that makes the most important decisions, that I receive a large percentage of the profits made from the sale of the water. . I believe in capitalism and I truly think that the economy will be better off handled by people with money and power. I would disagree with Marx and Engels theory because I believe in private property and only the rich can have control and power.

  • Tax Em'! -  I will tax the people on their water because I'm the one making it better for them. I make sure that wherever I get this water from that it is filtered, even though some cities have "fresh" water me and my colleagues think it needs a little more processing before it is consumed by the people. I'm just trying to help you, but in order for me to help I'm going to need some more money to further this production.
  • The Freshest Water - Give people the freshest water at their local markets because not every city has clean consumable water. So this is for any place that needs fresh water and any place that has not tried my refreshing bottled water.
  • Infinite Water - I will never stop supplying bottled water to people because I know that there are going to be some people devastated if they can't get their own water and their own kind of water that they want specifically.

Minimum Wage In The US

Arguments On Minimum Wage

Minimum Wage in the US has been a debate for several years and many arguments on negatives and positives of raising pay. The Minimum wage in the US is 7.25/hr. People are fighting to reach a minimum wage of at least $15.00. Many workers went on strike and were able to raise it a little amount, but even that wasn't impactful. An argument made on this topic is that if pay is raised there will be less poverty. The majority of people working minimum wage have families they have to support and making $7.25/hr is not an amount that can create a sustainable. As great as it would sound that all these hard workers get paid $15/hr, people argue that if the price goes up, employment will decrease. Businesses will not be eager as much to hire the same amount of employees because that will cost them more money. These workers don't want to be unemployed so they would rather keep it a low price and make some money rather than none. If we didn't have a minimum wage people's lifestyle would not be living. Having a minimum wage is what protects people way of living.

Below are 2 Supply and Demand graphs I made comparing a Fast Food worker to a CEO of a business. A worker at a fast food place would want an increase in the minimum wage because he/she is working at a low price already, so the increase would affect him. With CEO's, if the minimum wage increased, you notice that it doesn't affect them at all, because it doesn't reach the lines which means that they are already making more than enough money

History on Minimum Wage

The first Minimum Wage law was first created 1938 for 25 cents. CNN Money compared the Minimum Wage in 1938 which was 25 cents and saw how much value it has today which equaled to $4.13. In 2007 minimum wage was raised from $5.15 to $7.25. Workers today have been struggling to try to raise the minimum wage in the US to $15.00. The highest minimum wage in the country is in Washington State at $9.19 an hour. An average minimum wage in the US is $7.57

Documentary on Minimum Wage

Below is a video I have created with a partner. We went out and spoke to people who work for Minimum Wage in Chicago. We went to several places where we got good information from economists and regular people who have opinions on raising the minimum wage.

The Finances of A Music Engineer

Introduction
In the first unit of my Economics class, we've been studying utility and value. To close off this unit, our final project was to look into the future mathematically and find the true cost and opportunity cost between four college education options - a 4 year college, a community college, splitting the two, or not going to college at all. I learned a lot of new concepts during this unit, specifically on comparing and analyzing data. At first, learning this was very difficult but I was able to comprehend and achieve it.

My Career Choice
I am interested in Music Engineering as my career choice. Music Engineers have many options to choose from when it comes down to what they want to do with their music; they can be the creators of great movie soundtracks, become professional music producers in the industry and even make soundtracks for television shows and commercial jingles. Music Engineers have the option to expand their work and be able to travel frequently while interacting with other great musicians and people who are interested in paying them to make music for them. This will be great for me because I want to travel and see the world, and also learn more about other cultures music. Music is something I’m really interested in and enjoy, so based on the work I think I'd really enjoy this career. Music Engineering careers require a degree in Audio Engineering. To get higher paying positions and jobs, I will have to make a name for myself and apply myself 110% at every opportunity and chance I get. When applying for a music engineering job, applicants must have portfolios filled with their ideas and proof that you have worked with music before. It's useful to have internships during college, which great Audio Engineering majors offer.

Utility Graph
This graph breaks down how I value the combinations of money I have in 5 years vs 45 years. The highest line represents the ideal situation, and the lowest would be the least preferable. Basically, it's showing that I'd like to have $2,000 in my savings after 5 years just as much as I'd like having $20,000 in my savings in 45 years.

Supply and Demand
This graph shows how much companies would be willing to pay me per year after 5 years of working vs 45 years. The graphs are similar in shape because the demand of the career and industry doesn't fluctuate majorly. (Salary by Thousands)

Tuition Cost
For this assignment, I analyzed the opportunity costs between four options - going to a 4 year college,  and not going to college at all. I chose to use my first choice for a 4 year college, Columbia College (Chicago). It's seems reasonable for me to be able to go to Columbia and be apart of the Music world after 4 years.

Salary
I figured out my yearly salary as a Music Engineer from options of education which is; No College, 4 Year University, and Community College to determine how much I'd make total over the course of 45 years. I researched the income of Music Engineers then factored in the rate of inflation and estimated the base salaries. I also found the raise rates throughout my life to accurately see the outcome. The range of salary for a Music Engineer with a degree in the career is between $50,000 and $150,000. At a 4-year college where I could get the experience it's plausible that, with the rate of inflation, I would start off making around $50,000 and in 40 years make around $146,490 - which is also how I chose the raise rate. The minimum qualifications you can have that will get you hired as a music engineer is a degree in audio engineering. It also helps to have past experience with music and work with other people. It would be very hard for anyone to get a job as a music engineer without having a degree, because the salary would be lower.

Cost of Living
In order to figure out the cost benefit of each of these options, I had to estimate my cost of living during college and afterwards over the 45 year period.

Perception of Blacks in the Media

Many blacks seem to live up to these stereotypes of being the ones who are expected to play basketball, rap about non-sense, and gang bang they even take pride in these stereotypes. That is where the problem lies, and this isa case study analyzing why this is happening. For the first Unit in the Equality class we read a book called Race Matters by Cornell West. The book talked about how races are portrayed in the media and what goes on behind closed doors of peoples mindset in their race. We applied certain therioes of citizenships to Cornel West's thoughts and opinions about race. We took our knowledge of citizenship and Cornell West's theories and we created our own Declaration of Rights in response to the racial inequalities/issues that are happening today.

Preamble
This Declaration is necessary because this is something that nobody should not be doing to a race. The inequity that I have observed is How blacks are portrayed in the media. Blacks are believed to be less experienced in the media world, because of what is done on their part. We as citizens, must look deeper into this topic and understand that blacks today are not getting the same amount of respect like everybody else in the media.

Article 1
All human beings are born and created equal and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood

Article 2
Everyone  has the right to believe in what they’re taught to believe in

Article 3
All citizens shall participate in the economy whether it’s a small occupation (small pay) or a large occupation (large pay)

Article 4
Every citizen has the right to pursue their lifelong dreams and aspirations

Appendix:

Article 1:
The media sets the tone for the morals, values, and images of black culture and other minority cultures. Many people in this country, believe that the degrading stereotypes of blacks are based on reality.Such as the sterotype of a young black teen gang banging. Some people's action speak loud but they should never speak loud enough for everyone to suffer the consequences of the awkward looks and the opportunity loss in society to grow as a person. Everything they believe about blacks is determined by what they see on television. After over a century of movie making, these stereotypes continue to plague black people today, and until negative images of blacks are extinguished from the media, blacks will be regarded as second-class citizens.

Article 2:
Many black rappers glamorize the world of ghetto living, living only for material possessions, and bragging about being from the violent streets. Younger blacks latch onto this 'cool' image just like many other young teens latch onto the rebellion of punk rock or the drug induced blur of techno music.

Article 3:
Decades after the Civil Rights Movement, Black workers earn significantly worse than White workers. The gap is either 40% or 25% depending on whether the average or median census data is used, but the fact remains that there is a large gap.

Article 4:
Mintel conducted a survey to understand how blacks feel towards how the media portrays blacks. 80% of the people of color who responded said that they are simply proud of their race, while on the other hand, 82% stated that it was important to them for blacks to be portrayed positively. It is clear to us that black men are always shown on TV as to be part of gangs and smoking weed. This is a huge generalization of black males today. As much as people see black males on the streets doing “wrong”, they are mostly being judged for being of a lower class. There are many black males who go to school and have a career, but they are never portrayed in the media in that positive way.

Article 5:
Representation of blacks in the media can also be related to ownership. “Free Press” made a report called "Off The Dial” and said that of all commercial broadcasts and radio stations, African Americans only take 3.4% of it. Since African Americans don’t really own a lot broadcasts and stations, the owners can have a certain opinion on them and portray them as they like. It is still unjust, that African Americans have to listen to the negative things said about them. A big majority of Black americans are of a lower class and these negative advertisements does not make them look any better, in terms of wanting to get a job.

The Grand Boulevard Employment Office Building

For the final action project in my Policy course, we learned about what Utopia looks like. For this action project we were asked to write an ordinance for a problem and or an area of our choosing. The reason for this action project is to re-imagine a space in your community, by creating and presenting a multimedia Utopic ordinance. My ordinance is written for the neighborhood of Bronzeville, but I have redesigned an abandoned insurance building as an example. My ordinance is seeking to help people that only lives in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Having people that is unemployed come to this organization and choose a job that they want to apply for will be a great opportunity for them and the company. Below is a voice recording summary of what my ordinance is and talks about.

TITLE; The Grand Boulevard Employment Office Building

PURPOSE; The purpose of my ordinance is to have “gated community” unemployment office for this specific area. For anybody who is unemployed, they can come to this organization and sign for jobs that they want to do. Within this building, there will be individual offices for anybody who will need the extra time after they’re done with their work hours. When you are given a job that is not located near the premises shuttle busses will be able to take you to where you need to go and be able pick you up. If the individual is uncomfortable with that option, they will be given fare cards for public transportation via train, & bus. The reasoning for this is because there are many unemployment offices (30) across the city of Chicago. Usually there many people from all over city going to one building, over crowding the place, and not having the chance to even get a job. The closest unemployment office is 1303 E. 53rd Street. This  job site will be located at 4650 S. King Drive.

REQUIREMENTS;
  1. Work experience needed
  2. No Police record
  3. If you are between the ages 15 - 17 you will only be able to work for one of the 4 seasons. (During this time this will be only an internship. When the individual turns 18, it is great chance that they will be hired for their job)
  4. Have to be drug and alcohol free

TERMS;
  1. Your work attendance at job placements must be above 90%
  2. Behavior has to be at a respectable level
  3. If you are between the ages of 15 - 17, you will have to choose 1 season to go through job training
  4. Individual will not be accepted if they have a drug and or alcohol history (Check enforcement's below)

ENFORCEMENT;
  1. We administer drug and liquor tests. Failure of either one will result in a client being dropped. Clients will have  chance to re-apply after 14 days have passed since your last failed test. Only 2 chances will be given.
  2. Background checks will be conducted before being approved to this employment program.

PENALTIES; If any individual is fired, and or quit their job they will not be able to come back to the corporation and sign up for the second time

DATE; Starting the fall of 2014 - 2020

The Perfect Block - Entire Meals Food Market

This is my final Action Project in my Urban Planning course. This last unit was about what a city or a specific block needs that'll make it better. What I learned in my external unit before this final project was that every major city had a water source for trade and protection, large walls to keep out invaders, and farming for the crops. This project was for me to re-create a block of a city or area that I think need improvement or change. I chose the 46th block of King Drive in the Bronzeville community. The building I wanted to re-design was the Mammoth Life and Accident Insurance Company. I chose this specific building because its been abandoned for more that 15 years, and it hasn't been put to a good use in a while. For this project I am most proud that I can add my ideas to an area that I think needs a change.

                                          DS, May 2014. Plan for Transformation

  5 redesigned sections that will improve this space is; this place will be redesigned to be an eco friendly local market place. With a green roof included, it just gives the place more of an eco feel. Solar Panel on the rooftop also for the natural electricity. Plus, there is an organic garden on the outside of the building because of the large empty space there. Lastly, there is an irrigation system for the outdoor garden.

46th and King Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood. The main purpose of this area is to serve the community. It has jobs, community centers, and near by markets so people wouldn’t have to travel so far. The strengths of this area are that it has trade (stores/markets) and have buildings for the community, such as the Harold Washington Cultural Center. The only weakness is how the area looks. Even though whole block of 47th is sweet and nice, the lead up to it is terrible. There are buildings falling apart, & large vacant lots this space needs serious renovation. Remodeling and redesigning the look of this neighborhood would make it better.

The shape of the area I want to redesign is a rectangular shape. The calculations are shown below
Calculations #1; (meters)
Area = W x H
Width ~ W
Height ~ H
W = 40
H = 200

Area = 8,000

Calculation #2;

Volume = L x W x H

Length ~ L
Width ~ W
Height ~ H

L = 23
W = 40
H = 200

Volume = 184,000

Resolution to Living Condition's In Bronzeville

In Unit 2 of my Policy course, we studied the meaning of the word "Midtopia," the middle ground between dystopia and utopia. We learned that policies can mold a specific area and that they can create a more productive future for everyone. I am proud that during Unit 2 we saw physical evidence of how we can make resolutions to certain problems in our local neighborhoods. We went to the CHA building downtown in Chicago and had a guest speaker talk to us about how resolutions are coming about.  Below is a letter I wrote to my Alderman, Pat Dowell, to alert her to a problem in my local neighborhood; Insufficient Living Conditions in Bronzeville. I ask her to read my resolution because she the person who is in charge of what goes on in the community. You can listen to me read my letter below.

Eco Circuit

This unit was about the flow of electricity and how two kinds of currents came about over time: Direct Current and Alternating Current (DC & AC). Also electricity flows differently through different things. It's easy to flow through water, but plastic has nothing in it for electricity to flow through.
I learned that Nikola Tesla was the man who created Alternating Current, which is an electric current that reverses direction at regular intervals.
This project is asking me to create an electrical circuit with 5 resistors, a main switch, and at least one parallel branch switch.
I am most proud of being able to transfer the knowledge we’ve learned in this class to make a real circuit.

We had to build on our idea as we went because seeing it in real space & time made it different. As we built we noticed some resistors weren’t being powered, and had to move them around to make sure they were.
Our design evolved over time and became better because of the innovations we added along the way. Adapting to it was easy only because it was a great change overall.

Our model is DC & based of the ideas of NexTek. NexTek saves energy by converting everything to DC at once which eventually saves money and energy! Our real model is also using DC power because it’s power source is from a battery.
A few of the problems that I encountered was being able to use a good amount of energy and to save some.
Overcoming this problem, I used a few resistors so the number of electrons can flow out equally amongst my entire design.
I learned that creating an eco parallel circuit is hard to do.

Pros & Cons:
A pro in this design is that it doesn't have a ton of energy flowing through the circuit. If you have too much energy flowing, it could cause electrical problems such as electrical fires and too much usage. A con of this project is that we have enough resistors but it seems like they're pulling too much energy from our First Light and our LED Light.

Usage:
First light: Direct Drive Washing Machine
Second: LED Lights
Motor: Programmable Air Conditioning
Resistor: Refrigerator

Calculation:
Ohms Law ~ I = V/R
We have 6 volts flowing through the entire circuit.  Using Ohms Law if there were 12 Ohms, we would have .5 Amps charging the electronics.
